Patrols increase after rise in dog attacks

A spike in dog attacks over the holiday season has prompted Horsham Rural City Council’s community safety unit to ramp up patrols in high-traffic areas, including along the riverbank, in dog parks and in other populated areas.

Authorities report that the majority of these incidents were caused by dog owners allowing their pets to roam off-leash in areas where this was prohibited.

To address the issue, the council has reminded residents that they can be fined $395 fine for having a dog off-leash in a non-designated area.

Dog owners are urged to ensure their pets are properly restrained at all times outside specified off-leash zones.

The council has designated five off-leash areas for dogs: Weir Park in Barnes Boulevard, Jenkinson Reserve in Baillie Street, Langlands Park in Houston Street, Lions Park in Plant Avenue, and Central Park in Natimuk Road.

Outside of these areas, dogs must be kept on a sturdy leash attached to a secure collar, harness or halter.

Dogs must also be housed in a secure yard when not supervised.

Council officials urge dog owners to follow the rules, both for public safety and to avoid hefty penalties.

A full list of rules and regulations regarding pet ownership is on council’s website at www.hrcc.vic.gov.au/Residents/Pets-and-animals/Pet-Ownership.
