Wimmera tennis produces fantastic result at championships
The Wimmera Regional Tennis team had its best result since 2013 at the 69th Inter-Regional Country Championships, held at Creswick from Friday, January 3, to Sunday, January 5. With three wins and six runners-up, the team finished third overall.

Barwon went back-to-back with 306 points, with South West on 240 points, but the result by the Wimmera team was sensational, scoring 232 points.
Sienna Nitschke won the under-12s girls competition, Tahlia Thompson won the under-25s women and Tara McIntyre and Ella Thompson won the under-18 girls doubles.
In the singles, Adele Joseph was runner-up in the under-16 girls, D'Artagnan Walls in the under-18 boys and Cherie Wood in the 50+ women.
In the doubles, Eli Bailey and Adele Joseph were runners-up in the mixed under-16, Marli Pymer and Tahlia Thompson in the under-25 women's, Kate-Lyn Perkin and Meaghan Pohlner in the Women's open and Logan Casey and Steve Schultz in the Men's open.
Wimmera regional tennis coordinator Brendan Nitschke said it was their strongest team since their 2013 victory.
"This was the strongest team we had in many years, and everyone did well across the board," Nitschke said.
"We usually finish sixth or seventh, and to finish third is a good effort."
Nitschke talked about some of the player's matches.
"In her semi-final, Tahlia was down a couple of match points, and to rebound to win that match and then win the final is a good effort. There was a tie-breaker in her final," Nitschke said.
"The under 14s and 12s played on hard court and switched onto Lawn in the final, which made it a challenge, and Sienna [Nitschke] handled it well.
"Her opponent played an excellent grass court game, and Sienna was able to adapt after that, which was great to see.
"Ella Thompson and Tara McIntyre also had a good tournament, which was pleasing."
"We also had players in the consolation finals who did well, so overall, it was a great result."
